Immanuel German Language School

The German Language School was founded in 1975. It was Pastor Hans Haug’s wish to promote the German language in the Philadelphia area and also give enrolled youngsters some exposure to German culture.

With the untimely death of Pastor Haug in 1980, the post of principal was filled by Marianna Haug. Under her apt direction and capable staff the school grew in number of students and in reputation.

In 1999, Marlene Stocks became principal of  Immanuel German Language School. As enrollment increased, more classrooms and space were needed. The school was moved from the church premises to the Lower Moreland High School where there were adequate accommodations.

Today the German school flourishes, with two administrators, fourteen teachers for the children, four teachers for the adult classes, a computer resource coordinator, a cultural program coordinator, and an administrative coordinator. Besides classroom instruction cultural activities and field trips are offered.

There have been a good number of awards and honors won by the school’s students over the years. This fact attests to the proficiency of the teachers and generally high motivation of the enrolled students. A prominent faculty member, Mr. Gerhard Kalmus, has funded an annual scholarship for a senior student.

In recent years families from Philadelphia and New Jersey areas have been increasingly seeking a German language education for their children. Pastor Haug would have been very pleased by this trend.
