German Unity Day
Who can forget the images that dominated the news about 31 years ago: the coming down of the wall between East and West Berlin, the end of the iron curtain between East and West Germany? A year later, Germans on both sides of the old line that separated them celebrated their unity. “German Unity Day” (“Tag der Deutschen Einheit”) is observed in Germany as a national holiday on October 3.
In 2020, Immanuel partnered with two other German-speaking congregations on the East Coast (in Washington, DC and in New York City) for an online worship experience (in German and English) to mark that occasion. A high-ranking official from the German diplomatic community, who experienced the fall of the wall and the subsequent events as a young boy, shared personal recollections. Pastors Hahn and Eberle joined Bishop Ortiz of the Washington Metro Synod for a dialog sermon. There were music from Dresden, prayers, and more.
